I was woken up by my steward knocking on the door because he hadn't introduced himself. I went to the buffet for lunch then phoned my dad. Eurodam sailed at 4pm and I got chatting to a man from New Zealand who was on the cruise with his wife and British friends. Muster at 5.30pm was a very thorough affair with a roll call, fire doors closed and life jacket on. One lady had a terrible coughing fit, asthma inhaler in hand but not needed. The crew looked after her very well and she didn't need to leave. In the lift afterwards, a man was very sceptical about it being so calm and rational if anything did happen and mentioned being Secretary of State for Transport when the Herald of Free Enterprise capsized. It was a bit breezy as we went astern then headed into open water after turning. There was a solo travellers meet in the Sunset Club which I went to. I don't normally but I figured there would be a higher ratio of solos on this cruise so would give it a go. It was just an informal booze-up but Lauren, the assistant cruise director, greeted people. Jeffrey and Maureen, the resident dancer teachers for this cruise, would also chat to people. Some of us went down to dinner and sat on two tables, including John Moore, the former MP. Carol was just three doors down from my cabin and I learnt a lot listening to her that night. Went to reception and signed up for the internet, which was still 12 hours for £21. It really amazes me how they offer it so cheap when the other lines rip you off terribly. Little snackette at 10.30pm then bed. |

| Our first port of call was Livorno so I was up at 6am. Our original times were 9am-6pm but somewhere along the line it was changed to 7.30am-7pm, which was better for getting the ships. When I had been here previously, it was not only practically dark but also we docked in the main berths. This time I finally had daylight and would be in a berth fit for a bambina. We were last in the pecking order after Nieuw Amsterdam, Eurodam, Seabourn Spirit and some ferries. After breakfast I went to the Lookout Lounge for some peace and quiet to do the internet, only there was a keep fit racket for about half an hour with just two attendees! I'd already decided not to get off here but take the opportunity to photograph the rooms while the ship was virtually empty. There was a crew drill at 10.15am so it was quieter than normal. |
