Back inside and the Golden Lion for refreshments. I love this bar but still hate what they did during the refit. Bring back proper seating for all! It was semi-formal night, one of the most pointless poshing up nights still around. Fay was in a jumper and it was acceptable. Most lines have ditched this now, even P&O redefined it as 'Smart', so Cunard may as well get rid too since, as I noted in November 2011, it's astounding what people get away with. Roxana overheard me tell Fay she'd been on last year and we chatted a while, telling us about her holiday during the refit she'd mentioned to me in 2011. She was now working the casino while Natalia was in Veuve Clicquot. I know my bar steward in the Britannia in 2011 was now in Kings Court. Bar staff make or break a place. Dinner and I left early to see if there was something in the shop which may help my hip. They had Deep Heat, which was a rip off $4.99 for a mere 35g but you'll pay anything out of desperation. I decided not to stink the ship out until bedtime so we headed onto the Observation deck because Fay said the stars were so clear and she'd teach me some astronomy. They were very pretty, Jupiter was bright but it was so cold I couldn't focus my eyes on what she was pointing at. I just took a photo of Mary with her funnel lit, when they turned it off! Then we returned to the Golden Lion to relax. Fay had gone from Stellas to Cosmopolitans and hysterics broke out when, after posing for a photo, the lime fell in her lap. I'd just that second put the camera away so out it came. It was virtually impossible to keep a straight face after that and we completely ruined Patrick's set. I overheard him say to some people near him, "Sounds like a riot going on over there. Doesn't it sound like a riot?"

Zeebrugge was our final port and not one we got up early for. It had been a late night anyway with her feeling ill after all the booze and my hip murder. My revenge was the Deep Heat. Apparently, the fog horn had started around 4.30am, which Fay heard but she never woke me to let me know Mary was farting ten to the dozen. It was still a bit foggy when we got up before noon. She needed sustenance fast so it was Kings Court then we decided to Battle Blondie if we needed to! Blondie, for those who don't know, is an officious security officer who yells at people for taking photos of their own bloody ship or stands there silently, which can be intimidating. He's done both to me, the silent treatment in September 2012 while there on Vision of the Seas (another yard mate of Mary but has no pot holes!). He is the ONLY one harassing people, even when there are two ships there, as there was when I was on Vision. People on the webcam had been left in peace. Maybe he wasn't there! Damn, he was! But while he observed, he didn't run after anyone for a change. It looked like he was solo, which could explain it. I don't entirely trust him and have one last visit this year on Azura so will see what he does if he's lurking. So we got our photos then returned onboard, a quick drink in the Chart Room since it was the same deck. Then back outside on deck and it was unbelievably bitter so we returned to the Chart Room. Fay had decided no more hard stuff and she'd use the drinks package.

Sailaway was 5.30pm and it was even more cold. The fog seemed to have mainly lifted, which was good. Captain Wells came on to tell us we'd be hitting a force 7 - wooo! Not as good as the F9-10 we'd had in June but it would definitely do after such disappointingly calm seas all trip. Golden Lion afterwards and the pilot boat was a massive one, bumping into our side a couple of times.

Patrick turned up for his set ten minutes late and we laughed about Fay's lime accident before he began. There was a quiz at 8pm. They were doing this now, rather than the piano player working until people left for second sitting, which completely ruined the atmosphere. Since the refit when they removed seats, it makes it harder to get one when first sitting explode into the pub for the quiz. Then we went for dinner and I skipped dessert. I was delighted to find outside the cabin my Platinum World Club status notification - woo!!!!!!! My friend John was right when he told me a few months ago it would be delivered on the final night. Next cruise I get priority embarkation and four hours free internet! Well the internet's always handy, especially at those prices. I'm still baffled how Voyages of Discovery can offer the exact same service but you get twelve hours for a mere £21. Anyway, never having had a Gold card (still have my Silver one), I was even more thrilled to find a Platinum one inside the envelope. The bars were annoyingly full when people should be in bed due to travelling home in the morning so we wandered around. With even the Chart Room a bit rowdy, we decided to have an early night since it would be home before we knew it, despite putting the clocks back an hour. But then we changed our minds, strolled around the very windy Prom deck (Observation was closed off, as was forward on the bow) then had a late snackette in Kings Court, which had a better selection than at lunch time! |

Around 1am we clearly hit the force 7 as the motion began to put a strain on my back so I got dressed and went walkabout. I just love ships when they're so quiet. One crew member from the G32 nightclub was on his way to bed as I was trying to take a photo of the uninvaded corridor but stopped a while to chat. It was his last day, having been on the ship all her life and he didn't know if he would be back or on another ship. He insisted on taking my photo before disappearing into the lift. In the Britannia, the lights went out as cleaners hoovered, so one put them back on. A brief chat with the bloke on the Purser's desk, who had popped out of the office just as I was about to take a photo then slowly made my way back towards stairway A.

I did a few things as we rocked, hoping my back wouldn't be really bad like it always is on here. This time it didn't seem to be so perhaps stabilisers were actually being used. I'd find out for certain next month or whether I'd be lulled into a false sense of liner security. Mind you, she was juddering quite a bit. I managed to get maybe an hour and a half before the alarm woke us up. It was still windy but now also raining so decks were still closed off. A quick breakfast in Kings Court at 5.30am while it was quiet then back out. It was fun passing the QEII Terminal as that's where she'll be for her next to returns, so it her rightful place. The rain eased but was still coming down by the time we began to moor up.

We decided, since you didn't have to leave the cabin until 8.30am, it was a chance to try and get some more sleep only it didn't work out that way. A couple of announcements, particularly the latter from Captain Wells, made sure of that. "We're baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!" he announced as part of his speech. I don't remember him saying that on Oriana. He kept the funnel light off on her as we arrived though and did likewise for Mary - grrr! Not that we could have seen it with everything above closed but it's the principle. On Oriana, he turned it on after we were alongside. No idea if he did the same here. We went to the Royal Court Theatre to await disembarkation. We were Gold 3, which began at 9.30am but we were called fifteen minutes early. It took all of ten minutes to get from there into a taxi. Not bad!

And so after a fantastic cruise, Fay caught the 9.45am Red Jet home while I got the Hythe ferry with my dad (who had brought over some stuff for her). Even before we left she was talking about doing something longer, maybe a back to back transat. A few hygiene matters were cause for concern. Back in 2011, the ship had a major outbreak of norovirus during my cruise (which thankfully I didn't catch though those in surrounding cabins did). I mentioned in my review how you barely saw a cleaner until we arrived in Madeira. Well here we were, a little over twelve months on and there were barely any sanitisers (most weren't using what was actually full) while tables were NOT wiped down when cleared in bars and the Kings Court. That was about it really. My dietary requirement was handled perfectly so I hope it will be each subsequent time I'm aboard and (at the time of writing) I have two forthcoming cruises (December 2012 and July 2013). The main problem is they do not have an option for NO salt, only LO, which probably explains why my feet continued ballooning. Other cruise lines manage it, even P&O, so why can't they when there are numerous people who have to have none due to health? Mary is beginning to have the same effect on me Lizzie had and it's feeling like coming home whenever I sail on her now, just like 2006-2008 when I went on Lizzie. Mary is a nightmare to navigate around when you're a first timer and it really needs a long cruise to suss out all her nooks and crannies, but she's wonderful. Roll on December!!!!!
