Norwegian Epic - Western Mediterranean
Our final port was Palma de Mallorca, a new one for me.  Because the Captain had said we would be arriving for 6am, I didn't bother getting up since that vibration ruins good photo opportunities.  Instead I got up at 7am then went out to wait for Silver Spirit.  AIDAvita and Thomson Dream were already with us.  The AIDA was new for me too and the last of the current fleet I needed for the set - wooo!  I went for breakfast only to find Spirit was already docking!
A quick yummy breakfast and then off to the Manhattan Room for my tour.  Rather annoyingly, NCL say you need photo ID so MUST take your passport.  I've only ever had it checked in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.  Since my Scenic Palma and Valldemossa was the last tour to be called, I quickly popped back to the padded cell for something, bumping into Annette as I came out of the lift.  She asked if I was going to the dinner with some of the other solos so I told her about my La Cucina booking.  Coming back, I met Mimi and Hannah again, who I hadn't seen since Livorno, and they were on my tour.  Once we were called I got in the lift and so did Len and Julie and the couple sat by Len at the Cirque Dreams!  I, Len and Julie were in bus 21 and the other couple in 22.  Our guide was nice but did go on quite a bit about whatever.  First stop was some sort of castle.  I didn't pay much attention because he went on so much so it washed over me.  We had twenty minutes and apparently down the road was a panorama but my back hurt so I got a few snaps near the bus before reboarding.
Off up the mountain to Valldemossa where we had an hour.  A drink was included but had to buy any of the buns, which were €1.85.  I had the hot chocolate because I didn't fancy the almond smoothie he kept pushing.  It was all very nice but I think the tour guide or company are on commission.  Before we reached the Sa Foganya bar & restaurant, the guide was trying to encourage us to buy gold from a shop.  Be careful of the paving stones and kerb.  They are VERY slippery.
Valldemossa was a really pretty place and so quiet.  I love these little places rather than the bustling cities.  A couple on a Thomson package holiday were waiting for their tour bus, grumbling the information hadn't mentioned so much walking so I suggested they take a cruise!  I'd actually thought they were from Thomson Dream until they said not and had no idea there was a ship in.  After that was back to Palma to visit a pearl factory and again, the guide badgered to buy things, saying precisely which were the best items.  Julie spent so much time finding ideal brown pearl necklaces only for them not to accept American Express.  I did like a nice violet coloured set comprising choker, bracelet and earrings (rare to get a matching set) for €39.95 but didn’t succumb to temptation.  I can probably find something similar for less elsewhere.  The bull ring across the road was the penultimate point on the tour.
I chatted a little to the guide. He’d been all over the south coast, including the “Island of Wight” when he lived in Bournemouth a while.  And so back into Palma to see the cathedral, but only stopping ten minutes to take photos before returning to the ship.  If anyone wanted to go back, there was the shuttle at the port.  Bugger the cathedral - there were ships in view, especially Epic, towering over everything else!  Then it was back and food!
After another yummy meal, I went for a wander to get some ship pics now it was daylight and a gorgeous day.
My planned siesta came to nought thanks to a slight interruption from a maintenance man knocking on my door.  He'd been told the bed was coming apart so was there to fix it.  It had been like that since I arrived, as well as creaking!  He went after less than ten minutes and while it didn't wobble, it still creaked.  Messy bedclothes and no fun making them that way!
We and Silver Spirit were due to sail at 6pm while AIDAvita was 10pm and the Thomson an hour later.  When I got up to Deck 15, Spirit was leaving early!  Bloody ships!  So I got her at almost the same point both ways.  We left silently, slipping away from the berth and into the sunset back towards Barcelona.
I popped into the Lounge after seeing there were still some people about.  Some were going to Moderno for dinner and while Annette had implored me to go, saying she wouldn't pay $10 for a pizza, I stuck with my booking in La Cucina.  It wasn't very full, but maybe people had eaten or were coming later.  I had a nice view overlooking the bow.  Just a pity it was getting dark!  It was very nice but the host was a little suspicious maybe I had finished within 35 minutes.  Well I was the only one at my table!  The food was lovely though and I forgot to take a picture of my starter.

And so my last night in the padded cell on half a creaking bed.  I put my case out and decided to just relax before going to bed.  It was bumpy again - wooo!  For the first time, I noticed the sign on the inside of the safe and would really like to know how suffocation is possible.  No one to try it out on in a Studio!

We were due to arrive for 5am, and so was Carnival Magic - another new ship to me!  Unlike the AIDA, I would only see this one in crap light.  Because of out vibration and closed off observation deck, I decided to get up at 6am instead, ready for Ryndam, Costa Luminosa and Grand Holiday.  Ryndam was early - typical!  I grabbed breakfast after she went behind and got a shot of the Carnival lit up in front of us.  When I'd finished, I chatted a bit to Linda and Alison then went back out and saw the Costa and Grand Holiday coming.

I went back to the cabin and no sooner had I gone through the door, my colour Blue was called.  It was 7.20am - twenty-five minutes early!  That time was bad enough.  So I grabbed my stuff and headed off, the Costa finishing mooring as I stepped onto the gangway.  Baggage was there already on the carousel, some of which weren't moving, and then onto the bus where we had to load our own into the hold.  The rep wanted me to put my hand luggage in the hold, which I refused to do because of the breakables and she reluctantly allowed me to keep it with me.  I had no such problems a week before at the airport.  Gareth was on the bus and when he mentioned just picking up a DVD instead of pre-ordering, I realised I'd forgotten to collect mine.  I'm so used to doing it before or after dinner.

Unlike Celebrity, we went to three stops, mine being the second one (Terminal 2), where we arrived at 8.30am.  We had to offload our own luggage at the other end, which was at a different point to where Celebrity had pulled in.  Alison was having a nightmare because, despite booking assistance through the airline, Barcelona airport said she couldn't have it and all fourteen wheelchairs were taken.  The airport people were really quite rude and it's a wonder Alison kept as calm as she did and luckily had Patricia, an American who'd been in a Studio, helping her with the luggage at least.  One change I liked was instead of going up to check-in (or hang around hours like a year earlier), they had desks open on the ground floor.  I assume it's for just cruise passengers and does make a lot of sense.  The Carnival passengers had been booted off at the same time.  It really is too long to wait and I think cruise lines need to change their transfer disembarking times to reflect the flights.  McDonalds it was - again!  Only reason I brought Euros really.  I knew I'd be hungry!  But I had a couple of chats with those from the Carnival.  One was a solo traveller from New York who had never heard of Cunard or knew there were transatlantics going to Southampton.  The other was a mother and daughter from San Francisco.  I'd already seen the couple from the week before at check-in and later on, we lamented our flight being approximately fifty minutes late at 2.15pm.  The ground crew at Gate 18 didn't give a toss whether the plane arrived or not, even though we saw it pull up.  Then there was a lot of faffing about with one going down the queue checking passports then checking them again as people boarded.  Why????  And why do people ALWAYS join a massive queue when it's not going to get them on any quicker.  It didn't either because the passengers weren't going through fast enough.  I had an American couple from LA we'd been talking to sat in my row.  The Captain came on to apologise for the delay, explaining there had been fog at Heathrow that morning.  We'd also lost out slot and finally moved about 2.50pm - hooray!  However, as we were about half an hour away, the Captain came on to say, very apologetically, we had to circle and wait our turn - boo!

We landed at 3.59pm and I felt like bursting into applause.  I have never been so glad to get off a plane.  I hate airports at the best of times and much prefer cruising from the UK but sometimes you have to go where the shippies or itinerary are.  I absolutely loved being on Epic again.  Jade had been my favourite and now had been firmly replaced by my favourite ugly monster.  I really like the Studio concept and would definitely do it again.  They make solo travellers feel welcome and wanted rather than a thorn for not making whatever line as much money as they believe two in a cabin does.  No guarantees two people are big spenders, even if they're just friends.  It's a shame there are none with windows.  I'm glad this opportunity came up to have a proper experience and make a proper judgement of this ship.  The only thing which let them down, in my opinion, were the transfers.  But, as I said at the beginning, I don't know whether that was NCL or the company doing it.
